A doorbell that doesn't ring — or a smart doorbell that keeps going offline — often traces back to the transformer or the wiring rather than the device itself. Here's how traditional doorbell circuits work, what changes when you go smart, and what we check before we touch the hardware.
How a traditional doorbell circuit works
A standard doorbell runs on low-voltage AC power — typically 10 to 24 volts — stepped down from your home's 120V supply by a small transformer usually mounted on or near the electrical panel, in a utility room, or on a junction box in the basement or attic. When you press the button, it completes a circuit that energizes the chime mechanism. The wiring is thin, two-conductor bell wire that runs from the transformer to the button and from the transformer to the chime unit. This low-voltage system is forgiving, but the transformer, the button contacts, and the chime mechanism all wear out and are common failure points.
Why smart doorbells need more power than traditional chimes
A traditional doorbell chime draws almost no power — it only activates for a fraction of a second when pressed. A smart video doorbell draws continuous power to run the processor, camera, Wi-Fi radio, and motion detection. Most smart doorbells specify a minimum transformer output of 16 to 24 volts at 30 volt-amps (VA). Many older homes have 10V or 16V transformers rated at 10 VA or less — not enough to keep a smart doorbell stable. The symptom is usually intermittent disconnects, failed motion alerts, or a device that reboots itself every few days. Replacing the transformer is almost always cheaper than replacing the doorbell.
What we check before recommending a fix
Before we recommend any parts, we test the transformer output with a multimeter — both voltage and VA rating — and inspect the bell wire from the transformer to the button and chime. Bell wire stapled to framing for 30 or 40 years can develop breaks at staple points, corrosion at terminal screws, or shorts where insulation has cracked. We also check whether the existing chime unit is compatible with the smart doorbell you've chosen, since most video doorbells require either a compatible mechanical chime or a bypass module that lets the device power itself directly. Getting this wrong means the chime buzzes continuously or the doorbell draws insufficient power.
Wired vs. battery-powered smart doorbells
Battery-powered smart doorbells avoid the wiring question entirely — they run on rechargeable batteries and communicate over Wi-Fi without any connection to your doorbell circuit. The trade-off is battery maintenance and reduced performance in cold weather. Wired smart doorbells use your existing low-voltage circuit for continuous power, which means no battery charging and generally better performance on video quality and response time. If your home already has doorbell wiring in reasonable condition and the transformer can be upgraded, a wired installation is the more reliable long-term choice. If the wiring path is missing or impractical, a battery model avoids a larger wiring project.
