Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

A circuit breaker that keeps tripping is one of the most common electrical complaints homeowners call about. It's also one of the most misdiagnosed. Before you reset it again, here's what's actually happening and how to find the real cause.

Overloaded circuit: too many devices on one circuit

The most common reason a breaker trips is a simple overload — the total draw of everything plugged into that circuit exceeds what the breaker is rated for. A 15A circuit is designed to carry about 1,440 watts continuously (80% of 1,800W). A space heater alone pulls 1,500W. Add a hair dryer, a microwave, or a window AC and the math stops working fast. The fix is often redistributing loads: move high-draw appliances to a different circuit, or have a dedicated circuit added for anything that consistently trips the breaker.

Short circuit: a wiring fault that causes an immediate trip

A short circuit happens when a hot wire contacts a neutral wire directly, creating a path with near-zero resistance. The current spike is immediate and severe — the breaker trips almost instantly. Signs of a short include a burning smell, visible scorching on an outlet or switch plate, or a breaker that trips the moment you reset it with nothing plugged in. A short inside a device usually trips only when that device is plugged in. A short behind the wall trips the breaker even with all devices unplugged. The second scenario requires an electrician to open walls and trace the fault.

Ground fault: current leaking through an unintended path

A ground fault is similar to a short, but the unintended path goes to ground rather than neutral. It can happen when moisture gets into an outdoor outlet box, when a wire's insulation is damaged against a metal stud or pipe, or when a device's internal wiring fails. In wet locations, a GFCI outlet or GFCI breaker will catch a ground fault before the main breaker does — which is why a tripping GFCI is often the first sign of moisture intrusion in a bathroom or kitchen circuit. A GFCI that trips repeatedly under normal use is telling you there's a real fault somewhere on that circuit.

Failing breaker: when the hardware itself is the problem

Circuit breakers have a rated lifespan of around 30 to 40 years, and they wear out faster if they've tripped under overload many times. A breaker that trips at loads well below its rating, that won't hold in the on position, or that trips even with nothing on the circuit is likely failing. A failing breaker is a fire hazard in the opposite direction — if it stops tripping when it should, an overloaded circuit can overheat. Breaker replacement is a panel-open job that requires the main breaker to be shut off or, in some panels, a utility shutoff. It's not a DIY task unless you're comfortable working inside an energized panel.
